JaG – The Jarvie Game

The creation of the first annual Jarvie Game

Aka JaG  – “Jarvie’s Awesome Game”
View bottom for details on game

A chance to win super duper prizes

BACKGROUND (Yesterday)

I went on a photowalk yesterday.
I was around of a lot of awesome photographers, plenty of seasoned professionals.
But there were also a few photographers who were new to the game.
Some were brand new… having bought a new DSLR camera a week before and in one case the day before.

I have taught a lot of editing workshops recently.
Lightroom editing stuff: For beginners, intermediate and advanced.

But it’s been a while since I’ve taught actual photo skills and camera tech knowledge.
How to take better pictures stuff.
I did some yesterday and I remembered how fun it was.

You can ask Suzanne and Steph about it… we did an unorganized 2-3hr session back when I first met them.
I used to do it all the time for friends years ago when I wasn’t so busy.

I want to do it again. But I don’t want to charge and I want people to earn it.

THEREFORE >> Workshop

I think I want to do an all day kinda photo workshop thingy.
There are other winning options for those not needing or can’t make it to a workshop

If you would like to know more…
see the rest of the post to learn about the prizes and how to win

PRIZES

For the Photographer
(Person who wants to learn to take better pics)

A day long photography workshop.
Start off with some how to use your own camera stuff.
Learn the buttons.
Philosiphize about what makes a typical good picture.
Play with lighting.
The whole thing you will be able to ask questions
We’ll take tons of pictures.
We’ll throw in flash and unique lighting situations
We’ll have models
We’ll learn how to look for locations and how to use them.
My style is low key and yet fast paced.
You will be learning my style photography… thought I should state the obvious.
The day will probably include editing training as well.
Plan on a full day.

For the Model
(Peron who wants to have a bunch of pictures of themselves)

Not only will I take tons of pictures of you for as long as you want during the workshop
You will get tons of other people taking pics too.
You can do several outfit changes
Really pump out a model portfolio or spice it up.
Or just some for fun pictures. (To send to mom or a significant other)
You will have rights to pictures and a disc of the full sized images from me. (Plus online gallery of course)

For the Others (other options for winners)

* free 20×30 or 16×20 print from my collection of pictures on smugmug – but not limited to those

*If you win and don’t need training (Because you already know photography) I will purchase you a sensor cleaning from pictureline.

*Or you get a couple hours of lightroom training.

*Or $300 off of a photoshoot (does not include travel)

When

I figure an all day event should probably be a saturday.
Meaning it will probably need to be August 29th (Next saturday without a wedding)
I also recently got August 1st freed up… but not everyone can free up a date so close.
But I’m willing… and might change it if there is desire/need.

How to Win

This game is a point system kinda thing… also with some randomness

I state now that I can change things up at any time. Like in case I made mistakes or so it’s not so easily “Gameable”
It’s a low-key kinda thing.

I will add winners in until we hit the quota of Photographers AND Models

One winner will be selected by who gets the most points. (Plus extra prize)
One winner will be selected at random by all entries no matter the points
One winner will be selected at random by all entries & points matter (More points more chance)
One winner will be judges choice (Totally lets in room for bribary i know… haha)
One winner will be a suprise… meaning I haven’t thought of a cool way to win yet.
(Probably second most points)

This is not a paid event… I’m doing it for free… but if you did want in on it I’d say you’re looking at 500-800$ Just sayin.

Remember some are there to learn photography and some to model.
I will chat with people that do organized workshops like these and see what a good number of people is to have.

The Points

FYI : In most cases when i see the word “JaG” i allot a point

One time only methods

(5Pts) Follow on FB Fan Page

http://www.facebook.com/JarvieDigital
To determine who is following there will be a status saying
“Roll Call for Jarvie Game” – You must reply present
Otherwise points won’t be counted

(6pts) Review on FB Fan Page

Link to reviews

(2Pts) Follow on Twitter

My Twitter profile

(5Pts) New Follow on Twitter

My Twitter profile

(9Pts) Link to web page or photo-blog – from a website

Link to http://jarviedigital.com or http://weddings.jarviedigital.com
Link to http://jarviestudios.com/blog

This is for permanent links from one website to another – not just a quick mention on a post or a Facebook link.
Those temporary links are rewarded at (2pts each)

Each link counts
I will judge links by those that end up reaching my blog or website.
Therefore if you add a link on your blog follow it once so I can see that it is linked.
If you have several websites each website counts
If  it’s not easily evident that the website is yours you can send me a message

(3pts) Officially begin game

I need to know who to add to my spreadsheet.
By commenting here or somewhere like on twitter or email or some form where I’ll know to add you to my spreadsheet
If it’s public like on twitter it should say… starting Jarvie Game followed by link to this blog post … or Playing JaG
State it anywhere. Just being added gets you the points… do so on the blog and get yet an extra point for a blog comment. etc Just don’t forget to follow it by “JaG”

Multiple times methods

(1pt) Comment on a Blog Post or FB Blog/Note

Limit one per post – 3 per day
End comment with JaG so I know to count it

(1pt) Comment or wall post on FB Fan Page

One a day
Prefer comments over wall posts.
End comment with JaG so I know to count it

(1pt) Twitter message – (Containing the following)

Usage of … (The Jarvie Game – http://bit.ly/2Rarv0 )
OR … (The Jarvie Game http://jarviestudios.com/blog/2009/07/jag/ )
You can also write… (JaG –  http://jarviestudios.com/blog/2009/07/jag/ )
OR… (JaG – http://bit.ly/2Rarv0 )

Add-in somewhere in a message (like the end)
Do not make it annoying to other people. Max 2 a day

Can also be applied to friendfeed (my friendfeed)
Know that: I can do searches on twitter so I know when people do this.

(2pts) facebook status inclusion – or link

Use same lines/links listed above
Add-in somewhere in the status or link (like the end)

Do not make it annoying to other people.
Big difference in this one is you have to let me know it exists somehow… I’m not sure how.
Those I don’t see or am not told about I won’t count

Stay tuned… I could decide to add in other methods to earn points

Organizers Statement

I know I’m a total geek.
But… This will be so much fun.
It will also be beneficial to me…
And everyone else gets a chance to win stuff.

Shveet. I’m totally in! I’ve been needing some advice on how to spice up my photography!!! I’m kind of sad that I had to work instead of go on the photowalk. Hopefully I can go some other time though =)

  6. Nathan Marx says

Sounds like a ton of fun! I all ready have a bunch of points in the Jarvie game!

I think the boss would slay me if I took another Saturday off for a non paying jig. I may however crash your party for an hour or so to document some of the fun (hehehehe)!

You also forgot the other big point earner, bringing beautiful single ladies (hahaha).

  7. Becky Leung says

P.S. I’m now following you on Twitter, I mentioned your contest here:http://becksbrainwaves.blogspot.com/ and here (along with a perma link on the side): http://thecreativewall.blogspot.com/2009/07/attention-utahns.html. I’m pretty much bound and determined to win this =x

    JaG ftw.

  8. scott says

Becky I must admit you’re playing the game well!!
Not only did you get 9pts by doing a permanent link on your blog to my blog you also added a blog post with a link giving 2more pts for a “temp link”
That with the FB Fan page follow and twitter follow and a couple other things shoots you up to 23 quick pts which puts you just in the lead after a half day.

Those doing FaceBook fan page reviews are getting an easy 12 points
5 For proving that you’re listed as a fan
    6 For the review
1 If you do the roll call… is a comment on Fan Page

Of course only the Comments are repeatable things for the following days.

I think it’s really cool how you’re using social media to promote your service and also to create a community for your service. I’m trying to learn how pple are using twitter and facebook for business purposes and you are a super cool example. I’m not super interested in winning but I thought it would be fun to participate. JaG on! :-)

  36. Gloria Wilson says

This game has been fun so far. I am amazed though for how much time you put into your photo shoots and Weddings that you have enough time to do this let alone think about how to do it. You definitely have rubbed shoulders with Grandma. Jag

  37. Suzanne says

So this comment may be a little late but I just have to say to all of you participating in this contest, it is soooooo worth it! Last October Scott did this type of thing with Steph and me and I learned so much! He is a great teacher and you will love every minute of it. Good luck to you all! If you want to see some pics from my shoot with Scott, here they are (he also got me started on my editing and this was shoot is the first I ever edited in Lightroom):

Thanks Scott, you played a big part in getting me to where I am today both in photography and editing. I won’t ever forget that.

  38. Kimbrey says

  47. Rebecca says

I’m fanning you on FB. Now, I was wondering how many times I can put JaG in my comment and have JaG count for a point. Can I use JaG more than once and get credit for using JaG each time? I’m just wondering if I should spend the time typing Jag or not typing JaG. Can I turn it into another word and have it count. Example: “Man, I’m really JaGin it up.” or “That was totally JaGed.” or “JaGED!!!”

    ;P

  48. scott says

Haha… that would have been good.
But alas… the game was only 2 weeks long and long since over.
those attending the workshops have for the most part been picked.
