I really do Love SmugMug as much as you think I do!
Glad I offered to help them out this week at WPPI in Las Vegas.
The party was way fun… and I’m not a huge party guy.
I lasted way longer than most parties at the MGM suites.
People seemed to be having a lot of fun.
People flipped about the Jarvie Window… I’m serious, like they were floored… and frankly I was flattered often.
And this is a party of hundreds of professional and mostly Full time photographers.
(You guys are all awesome)
I’m just happy that I can share it all with you. Hope to see the awesome things some of you do with it.
Not only I give you permission but 1000% encourage you to make Facebook galleries or email or blog or Avatar them (Many have asked)
So have at them and tag these people… because frankly I can’t remember everyone and it’ll be a while before I can get the time to get them on facebook.
Sushi dinner party at the MGM amongst photographers and photography industry exhibitors called the Jarvie Window into action.
Me thinks it will come out a little more often this week.
Most people often have a lot of things they say they’ll “get back to” when they have the time.
Well I’ve got tens of thousands of those things.
And right now I’m getting back to a few thousand of them… from May of 08 when I drove down to Caliornia to do a wedding and proceeded to spend a week traveling around California.
I went through several deserts, including mojave, anso borego and death valley.
I went to the san diego vild animal park.
Traveled up the PCH all the way to San Fransisco.
Visited the Salton Sea.
Spent some time in the Sierra’s including Yosemite.
And made lots of other random stops along the journey.
I will proceed to edit them nice and show them off over the course of a few posts.
The first set is from the first couple of days. Gallery Here
(above) Some Highlights from wild animal park.
(Below) I can’t even remember the name of this place… I don’t think I owned a GPS for my camera at that time either.
Big sand dune.

Impromptu Decision to do a Workshop
On saturday I created an impromptu workshop on How to find locations and use them.
The reason was because an Intern just booked 2 weddings and had to do engagements and needed place ideas.
I said I had a free Saturday so why not make an event of it.
Not publicized
No one really knew about the workshop because it was immediatly full and therefore I didn’t announce it.
I opened it to the students of JarvieU and they all came.
We invited a few models to join us as well.
We didn’t want a huge caravan of cars… just 2 maybe 3.
No Rest: As we waited for a spot to sit at Red Iguana for lunch… we kept at it. (at least a few of us did)
Did it work?
I hadn’t done an event like this before so it was nice getting an idea of how it worked.
In short…. It was amazing!
Everyone seemed to really enjoy all the information that was shared on locations.
Of course other things were discussed and learned as well.
We even took note of all the spots we stopped at.
It was a fun experience because we had no pre-objective. We were out driving around SLC, just finding new spots.
We even stopped at spots which some attendees probably wondered what in the world we were doing there. And yet we ended up with some of the best shots of the day.
Hopefully beyond finding some new spots they learned to utilize well any location they happen to be at… and are able to see and find spots more easily.
We also had an awesome lunch and time to chat. (Red Iguana is Amazing)
AGAIN?
I have another free saturday coming up and I know the students are really interested.
I also am looking at getting a new Projector for the house and JarvieU events.
So why not?
Another Workshop this Saturday?
I can’t take many people and I don’t feel I need to  charge a regular workshop rate, specially since it’s only one aspect.
So at a fraction of the cost for a full day event. $200
I’ll take about 4 people. JarvieU students are still invited of course but they all know they’ll be kicking it in a separate car following us along.
So if you’re interested let me know.
If there are at least 3 people I’ll do it.
I might continue to do it in the future… but who knows if it’ll be the same cost. Specially when spring/summer comes and my weekends get much more busy with real paying jobs.
We start early and we go until people need to go.
Last time it was 9am until 3:30pm
With a lot of people there the ideas were pouring in.
The 4th of March JarvieU is putting on the tastiest event yet.
The Low-Down
We’re inviting a mixture of 2 groups.
Photographers and Food bloggers/Chefs
We’ll be learning how to take better pictures of food.
- Helping the photographers to get better at this skill and learn some new tricks.
- Helping the food bloggers learn how to take better pictures of their own food for their blogs and other websites.
Then we eat the food. (I’m pretty excited about this part of course)
Because the process isn’t done when you snap the picture we’ll take it one step farther. We’ll show everyone some editing using lightroom.
Just some quick simple ways to make them look better. (If they haven’t used lightroom before they should come to a quick pre-class)
When Where
The class will be at 2016 N Nuttall Dr, Lehi
Tuesday, March 4th 6:30pm
People Coming
5-6 Chefs/Foodies (Invites)
5-6 Instructors (Invites)
5-6 Student/Interns from JarvieU (Invites)
5-6 Other Photographers (Open)
How to take part
Those extra people who might want to come will be asked to donate to the food and props fund.
Let me know if you’re interested we will figure out the cost and try to figure out who is able.
For the rest of you we’re thinking of live broadcasting much of the event online.
Let me know how much interest there is
I’m pretty sure we’ll raffle/give-away one spot. Just for the fun of it.
The fates aligned and the photo angels have blessed us with the coolest thing ever.
At the Photowalking Utah event today. See their website. (Organized in part by Rich Legg)
There were a bunch of lighting setups (at least 10)
I wandered around with one extra. My ring light on my sb-900 flash.
I set it to manual and figured out good manual settings and let everyone use it even the canon shooters were shooting with the nikon flash on manual.
Enter 8mm
At the end of the event a friend (Jeremy B.)
Lent me his 8mm fisheye… I’m thinking what in the world would I do with this lens… I wanna play with my flash.
Oh well… maybe I’ll just keep it on. (Read later for more of what I was thinking)
Well getting to the point… This is what happens.
A couple of inches away from their face. Short enough lens that it actually sees the ring flash.
“Jarvie Window”
Consider it shamelessly branded. haha
Really. I’m not opposed to calling it something else, but I do want it to be called something. And that something should be cool and memorable.
Before I posted the pictures (full gallery)
I asked what we should call it, so I could title the post and what not.
Only a few people spoke up but they came up with “Jarvie Window”
I figured it would be fun and catchy.
I assume others will continue to do this because it really is quite simple and very fun.
Now this being said… I like my last name and I’m not shy.
But it’s not like it’s a typical thing. And the literal “Through the Ring Flash fisheye” isn’t too catchy
Yes you will see me doing this again… often
Yes it’s very gimmicky and doesn’t replace being able to take good pictures otherwise.
But you better believe that I’m going to be doing this a lot.
A whole series of faces in square format, doing crazy stuff.
Up in the face… no personal space allowed.
I can totally see this as the hit of a party or wedding reception.
There’s something me and Bryan Jones just couldn’t put a finger on… something about it that makes it so endearing.
It has to do with shooting through the circle.
Yes the lighting is cool.
Yes it’s often more of a caricature Than a picture
I’m just someone somewhere has stumbled across it in a similar fashion… but they sure didn’t share it much, because it didn’t catch on.
More technical?
Put the flash on the lowest setting… i was doing 1/128th
Use a super wide that is short enough that it won’t actually go through the ring flash.
Use a ring flash like this Ray Flash
Put the aperture up at around f/8
Be careful to focus on the eyes really well.
And then just get CLOSE.
And be creative.
Camera+Flash+RayFlash+8mm lens+Characters
This is the man! (Above)
He said “Hey Scott try out this lens”
And I thought I could be sensible and take off the ring flash.
Or I could be half lazy and half non-sensible and one more half inquisitive.
Recently I came up with this rocking idea to highlight well known photographers in a fun and friendly fashion.
Since a lot of people know about her and yet a lot of people don’t actually know her personally, we should do an event that solves this.
We’ll meet up (Monday 7pm)
Have an introduction, a short slideshow of work.
An interview and or a Q&A period.
Then just chow down on some potluck style food and snacks.
Mingle or network… or whatever you want to call it.
Brooke has informed me she loves Snacks… so lets bring those.
Maybe she’ll tell us what some of them are here in the comments… or take a moment to ask her on your own.
Did an impromptu SmugMug training, setup a new SmugMug account live and then went through pretty much all the functions of SmugMug
It was a first I’m sure for me to a group (and not just interns one on one) and it was a first for all that came.
Lots of pleased individuals when I left… I heard a lot of positive responses to what SmugMug has to offer.
My way of saying thanks to SmugMug for being great and dealing with me and all my massive amounts of pictures.
There was a suggestion by a couple people at the end of the evening that perhaps we could all write a comment if you were there. Everyone was passing around business cards and perhaps felt this was a good way.
I of course wouldn’t mind at all the comments… and feedback would be great, as well to show SmugMug how good a time we all had. haha
This class will be one of the first classes of JarvieU
It’s most everything you want to know about SmugMug as fast as I can teach it… with live setup as well.
And it’s Open to the Public and it’s free … and it’s also Tomorrow Night (Thursday) at 7:02 pm
525 w Bullriver Rd
Lehi Utah
Yes it’s late notice…
I need to set up a new SmugMug account for the ATP Project-Blog
So I figured I could do this live.
Then you can see me setting it up new.
And also you can see how i’ve set up and organized my main SmugMug site.
No it’s not as fancy as some people with all their CSS editing.
But it is large… I’m told I am amongst the top 10 users of SmugMug in the world if you count # of pictures or storage.
I’ve used it for years now and I feel i can answer most any question.
And what I don’t have an answer for we’ll figure out right then.
Haha you thought it was going to be the city. Tricked you.
They call him Boston.
He asked for some pictures and I saw that I did his shoot just a month or two before I started using smugmug… so I went back through his pictures and uploaded them to SmugMug.
I also re-edited his pictures some because I’ve certainly improved a bit in the last two years.
It is a good exercise for me and the student-interns to go over some older less essential pictures and play around on them.
Shall I Re-Edit your pictures too?
So I guess the offer is open to other people… if I took your pictures a while back and you’d like to see them re-edited let me know.
I’ll bump you up higher on the priority list if you’re interested in Buying prints of them as well… or at least if you’ll show them off to everyone, yeah but probably more so if you want to buy a couple prints
So the new years resolution is to not spend all 15 waking hours of the day editing and taking pictures… I need to play more.
A sainer happier scott should mean better pictures for everyone…
And hey come to game nights and maybe you’ll get your picture taken… OK I probably won’t take many pictures but if you ask I’d probably do it.
But it’s also a great opportunity for lots of us photographers (and regular types) to come together and discuss photography if you want, it’s up to you.
So yeah… that’s game night.
I write this post in part as a way to train the new student-interns of JarvieU
They all say hi… Chuck, Melissa, Jeets, Kara
But in all seriousness come hang out… rock band and what-not as well.
You can also bring friends, you know… the single cute variety (Chuck is single, just looking out for him
I wanted to relax and edit a really short shoot.
Well I only took about 45 pictures on my drive from Utah to Oregon.
I stopped to take a couple of pictures near the salt flats, then later a random mountain cuz it looked cool (not sure I stopped for this one)
Then luckily in a repeat of last year I came accross a pack of wild horses in the middle of no-where nevada.
