Let’s get down to business announcing a few things.

SMUGs

I’m heading the Utah County SMUG. (Smug Mug User Groups)

What is that? It’s a photography group meetup, sponsored by SmugMug but anyone can come even if they have no clue what SmugMug is… just a chance for photographers to get together, network and learn stuff. Oh and eat!

The SMUGs will be typically once a month on Tuesdays with guest speakers and fun events. If you have ideas pass them along.

In addition to guest speakers, possible photoshoots, training, we’ll probably combine past UPES events as well as Meet the Photographer events that more or less ceased when I no longer had a projector.

Yes people from other counties are invited just as we’ll be announcing and encouraging you go to the SLC SMUG group which meets every 3rd wednesday.

BBQ – Smug (September 14th)

The first event for us will be September 14th – It’ll be different. It’s a photographer BBQ – It will take place in Pleasant Grove at the residence of Jeremy Hall. More information to follow.

FLASH CAMP (September)

 053_J7S3223

OK so summer weddings are over. (Yes I’ll get them up as soon as I can to show)
So now what’s up?

Fall Plans

Fall will be filled with lots of random photo shoots… I can feel it now.
(Commercial photography, family pictures, portrait shoots galore and of course the 4th annual Charitable Event during the fall colors.)

I also feel a couple more Flash Camps coming on, along with some time and energy to put into other workshop.

Planning events for WHO? For future student-interns

To Qualify?

This time around what will qualify to come be a student-intern is jumping right into a project and proving you’re ambitious to learn and ready to work.

Each person will pick a project to lead and work on… and if they stick with it then I know to invest back into them. Teaching picture post processing skills and going to these workshop and learning events.

In the past we’ve had them pay to prove their intent but so often aspiring photographers have so many lenses to buy I thought this would be more beneficial… but if you want to prove intent with money or trade and jump right into training without the delay then so be it.

Who am I looking for?

People who are passionate about photography… and who want to free their schedule to learn… and are willing to work for it!

When?

Now! This week I’ve got tons of stuff to work on, so I’d probably cheat and start training on photo things right off the bat. (Then back to photo projects to prove)

8 of the 12 people that came to JarvieU Flash Camp 2

Since it was warmer we were able to stay out until almost midnight with instruction. We very much enjoyed the full moon rising about an hour after sunset.

See many more pictures on the SmugMug gallery

I guess you won’t know where I’m putting all the Hawaii pictures and stories unless I tell you.

So this is me telling you where to find them.

They are located on Envision the World Blog

More specifically the hawaii pictures will be right here… so far there are 6 posts listed with just a smattering of pictures. I’ve taken a whole lot more but I’m still here in Hawaii so I am just randomly going through them now.

The purpose of Envision the World is to help people understand about countries and cultures from all around the world. There’s an ongoing story on Europe from pictures I did from 2006 there are 9 posts so far with a planned 70 more throughout the rest of the summer. One representing each day in Europe. So that should be fun. Go here for Europe

 005_J7S4872

Consider adding the Envision the World blog to your blog reader with this RSS Feed

Also each post is mentioned on the Envision the World page on Facebook… so following there might have the same effect.

Maybe I’ll mention it from time to time here… but this was your fair warning that most of my travel stuff will be going on to Envision the world. Even some of the older stuff.

On that note… if you have some great travel pictures consider a guest post on the Envision the World Blog. If you take lots of travel pictures perhaps a more consistent presence.

Every post starts out “Envisioning … ” So think of your pictures in that way and tell us a good story to bring the other places to life. Far far away and near and next door.

This was JarvieU Flash Camp #1

And this is what we did and the photographers who came along.

An amazingly well behaved dog!

 007_J7S1916

Lots of fun techniques to do with flash… and we barely even got into them… we spent much of the time just getting the concept of flash down.
We’ll have to hit light modifiers and what not in another flash camp.

 070_J7S2017

We learned

  • Flash during day
  • Flash at sunset
  • Flash at twilight
  • Flash at night

Then we did it all over again in the morning!

What was gonna be

OK I meant to post this like months ago.
As you can tell… I didn’t.

And maybe that’s to your advantage.
I wanted to do a small workshop for either 4 or 8 people in Maui for 3 days.

Not so much to make money but to have fun and of course pay for the trip and to share.

Well I’m still going to Maui June 6th-11th, I have a condo, I plan on getting an off-roading Jeep and just going everywhere and taking tons of pictures.

But I doubt in 2 weeks time we’ll get the people together to do a workshop. People seem to plan months in advance for large expenses like that… and let’s just say Jarvie isn’t the best at planning that far in advance so I don’t know if workshops will ever be the road I go down.

What is now gonna be

SOOOOO…. Who wants to go on a Photographic Guided Tour?

1 or 2 people can even jump over to Kona to help photographic the wedding that saturday.

I kinda figure if you’re interested enough and have the time you’ll probably make it happen.
If you want to, you can think of it as a cheap priced 4-day workshop.

But in the end I’ll probably just end up having you split costs (housing, transportation)

Heck I know most of my friends are poor so I’ll give the fun/cute people a deal. Like you know they can be the model or something.

Why have people go?

Because last time I went i found that having other people there kept me motivated and sane.

Motivated: because I need to get my butt out of bed at pretty darn early times for sunrise and there are times when you just don’t want to but I know I can do it when I have someone else to help or when I feel responsible for providing a great experience. (Unless you’re hardcore don’t ask what time it is)

Sane: I enjoy talking. I enjoy sharing. I enjoy teaching. I feel that all of those make me a better photographer, and knowing I’m helping someone else become a better photographer makes me happy as well.

Qualified? Worth it?

Well I don’t know… I’ll show off what I did last time and personally I hope to get twice as good of stuff next time.

My style is this: I drive around a bunch and just capture everything and everywhere and hold up for a little while during sunrise and sunset.

So if you like 100% structured then you’ll hate this. I structure just enough and then allow for amazing opportunities and inspiration.

OK so I figured I’d throw out a little update on what’s going on.

JarvieU Changes

This experience has changed, I very much see it as a huge upgrade. No longer is it a normal internship experience. No longer is it office training only, or even a majority focus on office training.

It’s an EXCHANGE… I am spending a couple hundred hours of my summer training and putting on workshops and photography events. I put a price tag on it and then people work it off, meaning in essence they work off the training and workshops (Like a paid internship). The great thing for them is that this work is actually probably the most beneficial aspect of the summer for them. This way people put value on and appreciate my time and they feel their time is being valued as well. Also it’s happier on their pocket book to trade.

My hope is that because there are over a dozen students that it will be very worth it because I train multiple people at a time. I also try to let go and allow the students to quickly become the teacher… specially on small and simple projects.

THIS WEEK

  • Well last friday we had an all day workshop with 10 of us there
  • Monday’s usually end up being training days and yesterday there were 6 of us
  • I have a couple of big photoshoots this week and trying out having 2 assistants there.
  • Thursday evening I hope to do a very important and exciting presentation (two)
  • Saturday a Portfolio Building photoshoot
  • Pretty much every day there’s something except for today… but I’ve been able to edit and upload 3 batches of pictures.

Update:

Sorry I screwed up… I’m not doing an internship this summer. Because what I’m doing by definition can’t be classified an internship as I’ve been reminded. I thought I’d use easy terminology but I was wrong. It’s a hybrid more school-like, but not.

I’ve got a lot of response on my terminology I’ve chosen… I suppose they’re right… this is not really a true internship… it’s more of a crazy mixture of a schooling experience with lots of aspects of an internship. So there! Now what to call it? I don’t think a typical internship is near as beneficial to me or you. So I chose a hybrid to kick the butt of either of the two options of school or internship.

Question Night:  about Summer Internship

Thursday seems like a good day to do an informal evening where I explain all that will be involved with the Intense Summer Internship

If you are serious about the full time option you can also schedule any time to meet with me. If you’re just curious or you’re thinking more about the part time option (which hasn’t been decided) come over thursday. If a lot of people can’t do thursday I think I could change the date.

Thursday 8:30

For now we’ll say 8:30 because that is sufficiently after sunset that everyone should be done with photoshoots.

I’ve written some preliminary info and answers to questions below

———-
it’s not like I’m the only one that could do this, it’s just I’m the only one crazy enough to actually attempt it – Jarvie

Help a few, (a whole ton) is the best thing I can thing of right now.

Presently

Things have been great with the present 5 interns. I’ve spent a heck of a lot of time training them all and I’m happy to note that we’ve done some awesome workshops and trainings and I get to brag about how good of photographers they are. The purpose of this present internship was to focus on them being good at the post process stuff, but you can’t really do that without helping them in every aspect of their photography. Plus there’s been a bunch of class type experiences and shooting ops. It’s been a crazy time as we’ve just been trying to stay afloat when they’re at the office, trying to get projects done. Never really ever catching up. But I still have faith one day it will happen.

The time is now… um… Soon

The time has come to stock up for the summer on some more help.
One intern ends up taking me sooo much time to train that it’s anything but time beneficial. (Even though the satisfaction of helping others is always nice)

So earlier this year I went with the school type setup. JarvieU – maybe you’ve heard of it. haha

If one intern isn’t time efficient I somehow figured getting a whole bunch of them would

(read more about it – If you don’t like long explanations I’d stop now… since when are my posts short? – Besides would we really click?)

THIS SUMMER - We’ll do an intense summer internship.

50 pictures of the largest Festival of Colors (Holi) in the United States.

It takes place in a small farming community in Utah! At the Krishna Temple.
20,000+ people come to the event often parking miles away.
Pictures were taken by a group of 12 photographers organized by JarvieU

They had 2 countdowns (color explosions) this year.

I Didin’t get any colors on me until about 9hr into the day when this batch of yellow hit me.
Choosing your spot for the color explosion is very important. I picked a bland spot… but I made it work and focused on the crowd experience and colors.

Photography safety

Last year I wrote a post that dealt more with the philosophy of being smart with your camera. It still applies.

This year while I would go without any protection to the camera… I will also be buying underwater bag so I can get a little more crazy and closer.

Key Suggestions:

Stay away from people that are throwing if you don’t want to be thrown on.
Consider a long telephoto lens to shoot from far.
Consider staying in no throw areas. (If you’re more worried)
Use an internal focus, internal zoom lens… or a prime.
Pro lenses will handle the dust better than cheap lenses.
Use lens filters.
Consider a lens hood.
Don’t change lenses, specially not anywhere near the action.
Don’t change memory cards, specially not anywhere near the action, dust can be even more dangerous than water to a memory card.
This means get a big memory card.
Bag them cameras and lenses up… get some tap and cover any openings.

Wear a jacket and tuck the camera inside when not being used.
Make it known you’re not part of the action and they’ll tend to be nicer.

 003__DS21412

The mentality

This festival is meant for the throwing of colors, what do you expect? You’ll probably get stuff thrown at you. If at once you involve yourself you become part of the crowd and you’re probably fair game to everyone. If you’re clean you could either be a target to some or a keep-clean-sign to others that this person isn’t here to be thrown at.

People in the middle of the fray are way into this and expect anything and do anything.
People on the outskirts tend to do a little throwing hear and there but aren’t as hard core as the center.

Watch out for un-savory characters who don’t care that you’re carrying a nice camera. 99% will respect the fact the other 1% don’t care.

My 1st time experience

I took my brand new DSLR and didn’t cover it with bags or anything. I had a jacket which helped. I kept it under the jacket most of the time until all of a sudden i needed to take a pictures and I pulled it out fast took a picture and put it back inside. When I was in an safe spot I didn’t worry as much. More so when going through the crowds.

I even changed lenses and used an external focus and external zoom lens along with a prime 50mm.

Result: I was fine! The camera bag I was carrying was the hardest thing to clean. (Washer in delicate mode was best) The bag got hit hardest because from behind no one knew I was carrying a camera.
I made a lot of eye contact and was always vigilant of people with bags of colors ready to throw. I avoided areas that might be problematic

Safe Zones – and Crazy Zones

There will be areas (on or in the temple) where throwing will not be allowed for those wanting refuge.
The closer to the throng of people the more you should not have problems with claustrophobia and the ability to hold your breath when the initial throwing happens.

 016__DS21141

Worst Case Scenario?

Colored corn maze gets inside the camera and you need to take the camera to Kew’s in Provo and for $135 he cleans a large DSLR, meaning he opens it up and cleans out the intire insides.
He’s done a lot over the years after Holi

Photography for the more adventurous or the more paranoid.

Get an underwater casing. They can cost $1500 and up or perhaps get an ewa-marine bag. B&H sells them. for $300-400
They’ll make it a bit harder to navigate your controls but you shouldn’t have any problems taking pictures.

You can even use a point an click made for underwater.
I’ll have an EWA bag for one of my D-SLRs and my G-11 will be in the underwater casing.
Then I’ll probably have another 1 or 2 DSLRs that I’ll prep with bags and tape the night before.

I’m mounting a camera for time lapse pictures right above the stage.

Join JarvieU photographing the event

We will have about 12 photographers shooting the event.
We will have our own safe and clean staging area.
We will have an area for people to come and get portraits done quickly.
We’re syncing our cameras, they’re all getting sorted and edited at once (each photog can use their own pics at home As Well)
We’re printing up 10,000+ business cards with the link to the pictures photos.jarviedigital.com/holi
We’re donating half of the enlargement profits to the krishna temple
We’re using other of the money (if there is any) for future JarvieU events and projects.
We’re contacting newspapers and national media outlets to tell them about the event and offer our pictures for use.
If we can get it done in time we could even do banners they said.
We’re trying to get them all done and online in one day.
We’re experienced on how to edit them well. (But we’ll take as much help as we can that next day)
We’re having a prep our cameras party the night before.

This really isn’t a photo-making event… for me it’s a labor of love.
So if you’re thinking of joining us because you want to make money… sorry think again. You’re free to go on your own and do your own thing.

I do need some help on some of these things.

Let me know what you have to offer.

I really do Love SmugMug as much as you think I do!

Glad I offered to help them out this week at WPPI in Las Vegas.

The party was way fun… and I’m not a huge party guy.

I lasted way longer than most parties at the MGM suites.

People seemed to be having a lot of fun.

People flipped about the Jarvie Window… I’m serious, like they were floored… and frankly I was flattered often.

And this is a party of hundreds of professional and mostly Full time photographers.

(You guys are all awesome)

I’m just happy that I can share it all with you. Hope to see the awesome things some of you do with it.

So true to fashion the full gallery will be uploaded to a SmugMug gallery.

Please be patient with MGM internet for all 300+ pics to upload. Later tonight.

Not only I give you permission but 1000% encourage you to make Facebook galleries or email or blog or Avatar them (Many have asked)

So have at them and tag these people… because frankly I can’t remember everyone and it’ll be a while before I can get the time to get them on facebook.

Those coming by the SmugMug booth today at WPPI will get pictures like these.
Just ask for Jarvie – or even Wade.

We’ll get them posted the next day.

You folks from yesterday… check out your pictures here

Don’t forget the SmugMug Slumber party tonight -
I’ll be there… you’ll recognize me because I’ll have the funny looking thing on my camera.

Scott Bourne was in heaven me thinks.

OK so maybe this one wasn’t as creative or funny… but she’s gorgeous.

And the guy below had awesome eyes.
