200 Beginner tips for Quadcopters and the DJI Phantom

If you’re interested in this hobby let me save you a bunch of hours and catch you up to what I’ve learned in the last week.

Spend 30 minutes learning what took me 10-20hrs
From beginner to beginner you’re welcome.
This should help “get you off the ground” … get it?

GROUP?
I’m gonna start a photographer-centric group with +Barry Blanchard and a few others who got the phantom, to discuss ideas and upgrades and answer questions. Who else is out there flying?

PART 2 of the 2 part video

THE FULL LIST

It’s more expensive than you think

It takes more time to learn than you think

It’s addictive

It attracts a lot of attention from onlookers

Most multi rotors – quadcopters are diy builds

DIY – is do it yourself

DJI Phantom is one of the only mass produced pre-built ones

Therefore I’m telling you what I learned about DJI

But first LEARNING: MQX is a great small one to start with

MQX is pretty tough and made to take crashes

Learn with the MQX as it’s tougher

MQX costs a lot less

Even batteries are only about $10

You can easily fly the MQX inside

Even if you’re just considering the phantom or bigger just get the MQX right now to try it out

You don’t really need a flight simulator if you’re gonna practice with the MQX

but a flight simulator wouldn’t hurt and may facilitate your interest in other RC flying things.

TERMINOLOGY: Helicopter is traditional,

Quadcopter is 4 rotors

Octocopter is 8 rotors and so on

Thus they often call them Multirotors

They call them props- propellers

Or UAV – unmanned aerial vehicles

Or even drones

Let’s call them by their more toy names so we’re not confused with killing machines

Kits and DIY are popular terms

FPV is first person view

TX is the transmitter

they rate the transmitting devices

usually smaller number goes farther

phantom has been known to go maybe up to 1000meters

MORE TERMINOLOGY : GPS you know

ATTI – is attitude

CL HL are more common on Phantom Home lock and course lock… flying methods

That’s called IOC – intelligent orientation control

DJI made the best how to videos on youtube for most of this stuff

the phantom doesn’t come with a paper manual

there is one online somewhere

most people learn stuff via youtube or forums

GIMBAL is what keeps a filming device level

There’s so many opinions about gimbals

Gimbals use servos which are motors.

They are rated in torque and speed of response

They are controlled by the phantom itself

The phantom knows if it’s level, acceleromitor etc

NAZA is the brain of the system that controls pretty much everything in the phantom

There are other brains out there including open source type stuff for DIY enthusiasts

They aren’t mainstream once they get larger

Small toy ones and pre-fabricated ones are at bigger stores and amazon

but kit ones are usually at specialty stores

There are a ton of RC stores … more than you think

They often hook you up on shipping Which is good because they’re not on amazon prime

There’s a huge community of hobbiests in Europe so they tend to recomend stuff out there

You may end up joining your first ever forum just because of the DIY Upgrade nature

Yes there are lots of upgrade options

Upgrade propellers

Buy lots of batteries

in fact I bought 4 extra fantom batteries

They cost 30-40$ usually

Specs on those batteries are 11.1v and 3s LIPo 2200mah

3s means 3 cells – s stands for cells apparently

LIPo is lithium pollymer and they pack more of a punch for the size and weight

They are more prone to fire I hear

They say not to leave them charging unattended and be careful they don’t start to bulge or look damaged.

They have fireproof bags you should charge them in

Explosion is not common it’s just a precaution

2200mah is how long they’ll last.

More mah means heavier

Mah means more flight time

Heavier means less flight time

Can’t just get whatever you want for phantom because it’s the opening for the battery is specific

They connect with chords and connectors

the phantom connector is xt60

ec3 is another popular conenction

You can indeed rewire the connections

You may end up buying solder iron and electric tape

solder iron is spelled solder

If you change the connector on the phantom you’ll need to change it on battery charger

I’m told the phantom charger isn’t that great.

But this is from people that super geek out about this stuff

Most of what you learn online does not seem to have consensus but it’s like the people that comment on youtube… everyone has an opinion

Some of the people seem lots of fun

some seem like crotchety older men that have strong opinions about everything

However they’re a nice community and there’s not much animosity

SAFETY – There are lots of opinions on safety

These aren’t more killer than a car… but they are dangerous

Specially since they’re harder to use than a car

Be careful around people… in fact when in doubt don’t fly them around people

gov managed Parks don’t want them there so don’t get caught with them there and ruin it for us

Don’t look into going into business with these things.

Yes many aspects like everything in this world is illegal

every country has different laws

some countries require insurance

some countries require licence

united states at the very least stay under 400ft and away from airports

there is rare possibility of fire from batteries

RISK – You will probably loose your phantom one day as long as you keep using it

Write your name on it maybe

RTH – means return to home.

Yes it’ll fly back to the place it had gps lock

meaning wait to fly your phantom until it gets a lock

this doesn’t help much if you fly in the more fun ATTI mode

Don’t bank on RTH

Stop flying as soon as battery is low

it should lower itself if battery gets too low

don’t bank on it

Don’t be over water when this happens

phantoms don’t float… they sink

It may have transmitter problems and fly away

don’t use gopro in wifi and carbon fiber causes some problems (not sure about these things)

Cold causes the brain to not work super well

cold causes the batteries to not work as well

You can get about 8-10 minutes but it depends on the cold and weight

MQX is the same 500mah compared to 2000mah

Count your minutes yourself because battery indicator may fail

There is soooo much stuff on youtube

I spent dozens of hours watching

Everyone is trying to find a solution for best video

VIDEO PROBLEM: The camera shakes because the phantom does

When you bank or turn or go up or down the film is uneven

The frequency of the vibration causes jello effect on gopro

There are suspension mounts

Using moon gel to absorb vibration

Lower shutter on gopro to have a more smooth video

This can lead to grainy higher ISOs

You can put a ND filter on the camera

and uneven is fixed by a gimbal

from gopro or adapter to use regular camera type small filters

Different Props for more sturdy flying

but they don’t have as much give and can break more

buy extra props

consider graupner – 8×5

You really really need to balance your props

balanced props mean both sides weight the same

it’s silly they don’t already come this way but they’re cheap i guess

a prop balancer is 20-30$

be ready to drill them or ream them to install them

Get 8mm washers if you go that route

Weird DJI has a product that specializes in Gopro but needs lots of work for it to be actually good

film in 60fps

gopro3 allows 1080 60fps

even though you’re actually gonna watch at like 24fps online etc

4k and even 2.7k get jello a lot

position gopro so you don’t see the legs

some people change legs to accomodate different gimbals

Using isolation configurations of every type

Do you keep the gopro protected in hard case or not.

Sound is annoying but lets other hobbiests understand what’s going on (how hard motor is going)

BUY – MQX, controller seperate or with

D5e is great but D6i is way better

You can reprogram the phantom to work with some controllers

You can get a hard carrying case

A typical gimbal is anywhere from 150-400 for the phantom

Carbon fiber is popular do to weight

you can buy another battery charger

There are people who’ll upgrade stuff for you for a price

FPV is a whole other ballgame

goggles or a portible screen

hard to switch between the two for fear of loosing view

Some countries require you to have a spotter for visual view even still

they use their own transmitter

it’s said to be super scary on your first few flights

but also seems to be a more natural way to fly specially for the video gamers

you can view using the gopro

use a special chord

you’ll need to open up phantom to do it

open phantom for the gimbal as well

telemetry is when the quadcopter tells your controller the actual readings of the battery

otherwise you’ll need to see red blinking lights

the phantom communicates to you with blinking on the back of the phantom

green means your in GPS

yellow ATTI

red lights are about lack of GPS signal

no gps signal means no return to home

Red blinking when you get going means lacking battery

Always have your transmitter on when battery is plugged in

unplug battery before turning transmitter off

turn on transmitter with throttle down

special turn on command

helps to avoid mistake starts

start off harder than expected in order to not just tip over

much easier to fly than mqx

one that carries a dslr is many many thousands of dollars

their is a right and left joystick

there is a proper way to control the joysticks

easier mainly because it knows how to keep itself level

GPS mode will counteract momentum

Atti will allow momentum

People film in Atti over GPS

you can let go in GPS mode

If it kind goes to one side then recallibrate IMU with software

recallibrate IMU advanced

it lets the phantom know which is level and it’ll make it stay level in the air

Callibrating IMU is different than callibrating compass

their is a compas that needs to stay away from magnets

if it gets too messed up the compass callibration won’t work and you’ll need to use another magnet to hopefully get it in a range that the compass callibration will work

this callibration is the main one you’ll need to do at the beginning and whenever you go a far distance

it’s super easy and quick to do

IMU callibration is when you crash

it requires software and a computer

Lights on phantom are super handy to fly at night

even helpful at night

meaning you can fly at night if you want

windy days are tough to fly obviously

usually fly with it pointing away from you

it’s extremely tough to fly with it pointing at you because everything is suddenly reverse

you can quickly become disorianted

cut off proppelers if it’s gonna hit something so they’re not spinning fast when they hit something.

when in trouble sometimes it’s best to just cut power

specially when you’re learning on mqx

practice practice

About the video
I included every single picture of the family but led with about 30 of my favorites that I had edited.
Then quickly went through the other 400
And the music is that of the amazing +Peter Hollens "home"

About The Photo shoot
- We were in oregon on a slightly misty day.
- We just went to one location but I found about 4-5 spots with differing backgrounds.
- I did individual pictures of each of the kids.
- I did couple pictures of the parents
- I did an all children shot on request by mom
- I also go the daughter with her father and her mother.
- I did some typical stuff and some sillier stuff.
- We shot for a little over 30 minutes
- Then I went snow shoeing with my two nephews later that day.
- Oh yeah this is my brother's family.

http://youtu.be/t3l0UBGd_Nc

Ok maybe you don't need to "fall in love"
but just learn why I'm doing a Youtube Channel.
And understand why it's worth giving someone $20 in prints.

{I think I can recap why I'm doing a channel:}
I like sharing and it's given me more sense of purpose to create these videos while on the road and at home. It's made life more interesting. More of a voice.

{SERIES of Videos - a.k.a. Playlists}
- Interviews
- Product Reviews
- Location Reviews
- VLOGS/Updates (like this)
- Photo Stories
- Photo Tips
- Randomness
- Temples
- Timelapse videos
- Slideshows and Photoshoot reviews

{200 subscribers = celebrate}
I know I have over 100,000 on a couple different locations but YouTube is new for me.

Write a comment and put #20 in it (on any of my videos) and I'll give $20 to one of those folk.

From the side
Since I was kinda leaching onto their trip for the evening I decided it was appropriate to let them set up first and not shoot right smack dab in the middle but from the side. Plus no one else was doing it… so it'd lend to some differing pictures.

(and why knowing what others think is beneficial)

caution: a long post

When I started my public crowd sourced project to narrow down my 2011 travel pictures I stated why it was I was doing it this way. It's been a couple weeks so I'll recap and share some other thoughts as to why I still feel it's important.

How I learned
When I started in photography I learned everything by myself… sure it took years and lots more hours that someone starting off now (with all the helps out there) but the way I learned and the mindset has still stuck with me til today. I had and still have a self-motivated push to always experiment and discover new things and let my creativity take me wherever it would.

AND one of the biggest helps I had was my ability to view first hand the reactions and expressions of other people. I sat down with people at the computer and watched them look at my pictures.

Sure I had an advantage coming from a family of artists and I believe that helped me in my understanding of what good art looked like. However I really fine tuned my knowledge of good pictures by showing my own pictures to my friends and clients and seeing how they reacted to the pictures. Not Just what they said but their very expressions and laughs or silence. Especially important is what they did with the pictures after.
Yes, this method required a lot of people skills and meant to not read into everything all the time.

Aesthetics, in a sense means: What is pleasing to look at… what people like to look at. Some one that is good at photography knows how to make a picture that the majority of people like seeing.

I have a better ability to look at a picture and say: "I know most people will love this picture even though it's not my favorite and understand and accept it's value even so"
In fact my favorite picture from 2011 travel didn't make the top 5 … i think it got 7th place… and it's still my favorite. But that's largely because of my personal emotional connection to the picture and the theme. And now I know which other pictures pull at the heart strings of other people the most and the one that does the best job at that is my second favorite … so… it's pretty good eh?

I think people can look through this album of top 5 and if they were following the whole culling process down from 100 they can learn soooo much about photography and how people react to pictures… a learning photographer can read between the lines and hopefully learn lots about what interests other people. (and I hope we're all learning photographers)

{CAUTION}
If you ever come across a photographer that says something like "It doesn't matter what other people think about a picture" to be fair they're most likely trying to make the point that the photography should speak to you and make you excited to take pictures. Because the excitement and personal emotions are so very important to your progression in photography as well as developing your trust in your own judgement. It's important you don't become dependent on the opinions of others.

Sharing beauty
BUT, photography to 99.9% of people is about sharing the beauty we see and we can create with others.

IT IS IMPORTANT to know what others find beautiful because when we know we are able to create things that will bring beauty and enjoyment to their lives.

I believe it's about creating a healthy balance between both these motivations.

So in the end if you were to ever run across a photographer that dubs himself "a teacher" and he tells you "It's not important what other people think about your pictures" all while talking to you about how to improve your photography and talking aesthetics…
WALK AWAY

That teacher is doing you a dis-service, they may understand the point but they're just telling you things they think you want to hear to gain brownie points and they're being LAZY by not helping you understand the balance that there should be in building your internal passion to create and perhaps the therapeutic effect on the soul along with a healthy respect of the judgement of others and the concepts of aesthetics.

If he's adamant and he actually believes it really really doesn't matter what others think and he's not just saying it to prove a point… RUN AWAY (unless he's your therapist trying to help you do something that is truly just for you)

It's cute to boil it down to cliches and one liners that sound great and get you a lot of sympathetic Likes online… well I think I've made my thoughts clear. (which is much better than the previous scathing remarks I previously wrote and then of course did not post because there was this much kinder way to say how full of crap I thought someone's sentiments were)

So to recap: A large part of how I got good at photography was that I knew what people appreciated and I knew what would make them happy. In general and with specific families and peoples.
It works for landscapes too. AND I knew and followed what motivated me and what made me passionate for photography.

Jarvie Style
My way is unique and very ME and yet it appeals and came from a healthy understanding of what other people like. But it's not imitation or regurgitation.
