We did find lots of places to get out of the rain… but we got plenty of wet.

Right to side of the road on our way up to Park City

Our very first shots of the day… back when we were kinda dry.

Bridevale falls… one of the only times I’ve done pics there.

Thought I’d try something interesting up in park city.

And below – More rain.

One Big Print

Wanna see it bigger
You can find a 4000px version here if you want to zoom in even more and see all the fun expressions.

Added more friends
I went to 2.5″ a circle instead of 3″ and was able to add lots more people. I was able to add dozens more of my close friends and Photographers I know.
The one last night was more about getting feedback on the design. (People liked it so I stuck with it and it’s being printed right now as a 40×60… so don’t tell me problems now. haha)

Let’s tag this one instead of the one now.
If you’re not on here… it means you’re not a good enough friend and you need to visit more. haha
Or it means I’m not perfect and missed stuff.

What is a Jarvie Window?

Before I explain what my plans are for this year, Let’s recap.

The first year I went to the Festival of colors I just went to take pictures at a cool event. I didn’t have any plans… just shoot. I was lucky to get some of what are still my favorite pictures.

Since then my blog posts on the event and in particular what I do as a photographer to keep my gear safe are very popular. (Note: I will not convince you it’s safe because I stopped caring if more photographers come or not, haha)

Last year I went to document. I was there to document every aspect of the festival from morning when no one was there… until well after sunset when everyone had left except some of the staff.

you can see all the pictures from previous years here

 0029__J3S2880 0003__J3S2243

Last year I also wanted people to go and get pictures of themselves from the event. Just give back kinda thing.

While I had fun last year it was exhausting organizing about 10 photographers and going through all those images. But it was awesome having a home base like we had with the trailer.

Last year I introduced the Jarvie Window to the festival… or did I introduce the festival to the Jarvie Window? haha

 0008__J3S3194 0051__J3S3382

I want to take memorable images. Something different… something more than just the documenting.

For sure I’ll take part in taking pictures in many if not all the count down throwings they will do every 2 hours.

But I also want to do pictures in a more controlled environment.

I played at it a little last year when a couple people dressed up for pictures.

 0049__J7S3153 0027__J3S3067

I want to turn them into more planned approaches with people there throwing the right colors at the right time from the best angles and Avoiding my lighting equipment which I’ll have to make even better images.

This is part of my IDEAS WEEK (on my facebook page)

I want people to be the creative director of some of these shoots… not just ideas person. Help organize with me an idea from start to completion.

While ideas are great… it’s people willing to go the extra step to help make it happen.

Individuals, groups, couples, Weddings, brides, High Fashion, event, marketing, random things, planned/staged events etc etc…

Raid your old wardrobe for that awesome outfit that can be worth the exchange for some great pictures (maybe it’s one that you just don’t wear anymore)

Raid a local thrift store for the best outfits.

Come in costume.

But make it more than … this will look cool.

Because I only have so much time that day and the best ideas with people willing to put in effort will get that time.

Companies you should think how we could make this work for you. It doesn’t have to be on the day of. We can do commercial shoots using the colors… anywhere. It promotes you, it promotes me and it promotes the festival.

While I’ve got a couple of fun ideas already planned and in motion, I have a few others I’ll gladly put to the wayside if others come up with better stuff.

GAUNTLET… thrown down

so you models, aspiring models, creative directors, past, present and future brides who love wearing pretty dresses, you crazy wild fun people, and all you CREATIVE individuals… let’s see what you can come up with.

Another day of Jarvie Window pictures… feel free to get the pictures of yourself and use them as your avatar online. All good with me.

Sunday pictures could be found here

Monday pictures can be found here

and yesterday’s pictures can be found here

If you already visited a gallery looking for your pictures but couldn’t find them… it is probably because they weren’t uploaded yet. The internet connection is pretty bad here at the MGM as I’m sure you know. So check again.

It was a hit last year at the SmugMug party and it was again this year.

I will say that the D7000 has a lot of trouble focusing without light. Seems like the D300s does a much better job with lack of light (not perfect… but better)

Feel free to follow the link to the gallery and use these pictures. Use them… make a gallery on facebook… profile… whatever. I know photographers sometimes worry about this but you have my full permission to use them.

I have a lot of fun at these parties because I get to meet people taking pictures… in fact I’m sure I’d have a lot less fun if I wasn’t “working”

So I’m glad SmugMug lets me come and spread the joy.

I’m happy everyone loves the pictures so much… glad to know I’ve helped contribute in some small way to the world of photography.

Next year we’re doing some Badge Bling… some ribbons which will read “I Looked through Jarvie’s Window” – If there’s something better let me know. Many thanks to Brittany Cascio for the idea. Hope it’s cool and fun and people like the idea.

We’ll see you next year at the party.

I’m hear til thursday so come find me around anywhere. Twitter me at @jarvie

We’ll get you some more pictures … while you’re sober … or specially if your picture turned out blurry.

See the gallery here

Please allow time for all 200+ pics to upload to the site on this slow Hotel Internet

Last year was the first be unveiling of the style known as Jarvie Window

It later went on to be featured on Strobist and Photofocus and for lots of random photographers around the world to use the style at weddings and other such events.

It’s been a lot of fun seeing what’s happened since.

I do these pictures at every wedding and the guests (and bride and groom) have a lot of fun with it.

I like to think of it as the new PhotoBooth

In any case each day I’ll be sharing some pictures taken from the previous day.

And so it goes from WPPI 2011 day 1 (sunday)

See them all – Gallery

Pictures are presently uploading… so I’m gonna go play down at the convention floor… if you’re at WPPI make sure to look me up, you’ll see me walking around and will probably see me at the SmugMug booth and the SmugMug party which is tonight BTW

Helpin’ out

I’m writing this because I’ve had many people ask me what kind of camera I suggest… more or less they’re asking what do I need to get into photography (pro or not)

So this is some of my advice and where I’m coming from

The Beginning

About 5yrs ago I jumped into photography. 6yrs ago I was dinking around with a Casio 4mp point and click in Europe and recognized how much I liked it… and then others gave me confidence by telling me they liked the travel pictures I took.

Out on a Limb

Then I went out on a limb and put a DSLR on a CC as a poor student and someone else went on a limb and had me do engagement pictures… then a bunch of other crazy people went on a crazier limb and had me photograph their weddings.

I had no formal training, I had no mentor, I hadn’t read books, It was just this year I started looking at other people’s photography blogs.

But hey it worked for me… in fact I’m even proud of all of my weddings, even that first year. I mean I could run circles around that version of me from 5yrs ago with one hand tied behind my back and a canon camera (haha)

An advantage

I think all along I kinda cheated… I had a bit of both worlds… I loved buttons and I came from a family of artists.

And I think many of you out there have similar advantages… you have a good eye for pictures. (The way to figure that out is if you really really like my work)

You come from an artistic background and that goes beyond photos… creativity is more than pictures… a dancer or painter or musician has creativity that Can spill over into other forms of art.

The Geek and the Philosopher

Hey this is Scott I’m back again

Well here we are again… where did we leave off?

Well we were fighting bad guys and saving orphans.

Ok Ok we were looking at pictures and hearing about the eventful day in which an eternal family was formed. (And saving defenseless kittens from savage wolves)

It went something like

Bobbie Jane met a boy

He took her into his arms

They sat there on the pier contemplating their future

 006_J7S1211 022_J7S1149

Sometimes doing dip kisses

He then took her to the Temple

Now he’s married to Bobbie Jane

And now you’re caught up…

So finally we can get down to business and talk about the PARTY

(A celebration of love if you will)

A time for…

A wedding recently at La Cailled in Sandy Utah. I took out the Jarvie Window for just a few minutes and got some pictures when they started dancing and pulled some people in for some close ups of course.

Yes this was a compilation of a few families and random individuals… but it’s a great example of the awesome pictures that can be had during something as common as a dinner.

I focused a lot on the great food with how diverse the ingredients were and how bright the colors were. But I’ll also add some pictures of the people.
To see the full gallery go here.

Of course these would probably be great for some sort of cooking blog or book.

If you’re a cook and planning a large meal like this doesn’t hurt to ask to see if I have the time to come and document the event, it can be fun at times and I wouldn’t mind the good meal. Specially the meals that will be photogenic.

 001_3S20294 004_3S20263

These are not set up… these are not stock shoots. These were just taking in the action and the layout as it was.

So I love the concept of family lifestyle photography. I don’t often find the time to do a lot, but it’s a lot of fun and perfect for my style of shooting.

BTW, if you have ideas or events like these let me know… who knows I might be free and able to come do them. It’s worth a shot.

So the question is… Who’s totally jealous of this little kid’s birthday party?? Come on now, admit it!

Yes they did have Jedi Training available!

 015_3S21442 016_3S21520

Yes I made a church cultural hall look pretty OK! I’m awesome! hahaha

Oh and the jarvie window pictures are always fun for a little end of party.
