Commercial shoots are a lot of fun, though they are very demanding on proficiency and level of images … however there’s something about them that are much less challenging than a wedding day.

But both commercial shoots and weddings provide unique challenges that I thrive on and love.

Having to deal with small groups or single inviduals makes it easier in many respects to weddings and the fact they are beautiful models makes it a lot of fun too.

Models never say: “I don’t know what to do” or “You tell me what to do” – They do stuff and if you have a request they’ll switch and do that.

With the three models I worked with over the 2 days I found that I didn’t have to give tons of directions… I was able to focus on awesome pictures.
Most of the directions were a matter of  adapting their pose while changing only a few small things like moving their hand forward or simple stuff like that.

I was able to do great work for this clothing line with these models while still maintaining my objective to bring out personalities and do my look and style of images.

They have already gone through the images of the day and selected over 500 possible pictures… I’m just sharing a small portion.

The purpose of this post is to inspire people to take pictures wherever they want. Old stereotypes be damned.

Baker is what many might consider one of the Ugliest towns in the United States, boring and hot. Good for gasoline and some fast food. So I was excited to shoot some engagement pictures there. The couple traveling with me seemed to think I was just being goofy and playing a joke, (understandable) so we only took a few.

(Above) This is just outside of Baker… the mountains are certainly nothing out of northern Utah… not the typical vision of beauty. But it makes it strong and unique. Yeah I wish I had shot for more than about 2-3 minutes. I also wish it wasn’t 100 degrees.

What’s the most distinctive thing about Baker? The tallest thermometer in the world.
So I convinced them to get out for a minute or two and shoot here in the middle of an ugly, empty, hot and dirty parking lot.

Looking back the iconic aspect of having the thermometer is cool but I’m such a fan of the colors and the sky. Made laying down on the burning hot ground worth it.

Underneath a billboard for some shade… hoping to get the trailer park a bit more in the scene. I should have stoop up high on something to get more of the scenery.

The colors of this place are distinct in the pictures… you can’t really tell it’s late morning and almost 100 degrees. I actually like the way the color of this place is mid day.

NOT BAKER (Below)

OK so we stopped several locations during our trip and this was mid morning outside of st. george off of some random street. The color and light was amazing when we passed by but we hit another location first and so we didn’t get back for about an hour. easily my favorite pictures of the event… even if I was excited about trying to make Baker look good.

I’ll do more spots in baker next time.

I suppose many of you do not realize how much a fan of “Car Photography” I am.

No, not pictures OF cars… but pictures FROM cars.

I find a great satisfaction from taking an awesome picture while being really lazy, and that means taking it while in my car.
Some of my favorite images and favorites of others were taken while in a car.

I’ve turned it into a science… I could go on an on for a couple hours about the finer techniques of “driving photography”

Of course I do consider myself somewhat of a documentive photographer, I’m more concerned with capturing the image and capturing LOTS.
I don’t have a pressing need or desire to come away with the ONE shot… I like lots. (motivated by one of my future projects)

When I travel I’m always wanting to see what’s around the corner… I don’t want to stick around here.

(Above) For this picture I stopped and rolled down the window, because I just couldn’t handle not stopping… the light was too amazing

(BELOW) For the following I didn’t roll down the window… I shot through the window… no… actually it wasn’t clean.
But I couldn’t worry about it, it was clean enough and the site was drawing me in so much I just had to.

 006_DSC7522

So I shot straight through the front window.
In fact I didn’t stop for this one… I suppose I was still going pretty fast, but these pictures were taken at 2.8 pushing the shutter speed to 1/8000th

Here you can even see the outline of my dashboard.

Warning: Do not attempt at home ;) – I am not only experienced at this, I’m a long time veteran and very cautious, and a tad crazy.

I’ll try to do more posts talking about my travel photography and driving photography if people are interested.

This is pretty much all I took pictures of this day… on the road back from San Diego

I took these pictures July 3rd

Thought I’d post them to be seen… better late than never.
It’s a sign of all those from later in July and August to be posted some time soon.
